When a new patient contacts our office for a first
time TMD consultation, they are appointed as soon as possible for an
extensive Head and Neck examination and the collection of their dental
and medical history. If the patient is in acute pain, they will
be appointed immediately to get them out of pain. The
first appointment is a data gathering appointment so that all pertinent
information is available to Dr. Wais to study and create a diagnosis
and treatment plan for this particular problem. Indicated x-rays
are taken after the examination of the patient. Cat scans of
the joints may be indicated as well as diagnostic models of the bite
relationship. Photographs of the patient's head and neck will
be taken to study in their absence.
In general, we make a follow-up appointment for a consultation with
Dr.Wais approximately one week after diagnostics. At this appointment,
Dr.Wais will go over all test results and explain the degree of your
disorder (if you indeed have a TMJ disorder). He will be able to outline
why you have been experiencing the symptoms you have. For many people,
this is a great relief finally hearing that they have a treatable disorder
and that they are not just “high strung”, overly emotional,
or even a hypochondriac.
Dr.Wais will then present an outline of treatment that is accomplished in phases and is individually prepared for each patient.
About insurance coverage: TMJ disorder is a medical problem, not dental, although most treating providers are dentists. In general, we find that reimbursement from medical carriers to be minimal. Please check with your own medical benefit carrier about TMJ disorder coverage. |
